Pets and Hardwood Floors - Cat Urine

If you have pets hardwood floors are actually a very good idea.  It is much easier to clean pet hair from a floor rather than a carpeted surface.  However, cat urine is another thing all together.  Cat urine is very strong and can badly damage hardwood floors.  You must tackle the stains immediately in order to avoid permanent damage.

The best way to clean up these “accidents” is to blot up the urine immediately with paper towels.  Then, wash the area with white vinegar to remove the stain and hopefully the odor.  Keep doing this until the paper towel no longer shows the yellow stain of the urine.  Again using paper towels, dry the affected area.  This method should work in removing the stain from the hardwood floor.

There are several commercial products that you can try if there is still a lingering odor.  We have tried Odorfix and Urine-OffTM and both seem to work well.  You will know there is still an odor there if the cat returns to the same spot.  If you put the feeding dish there the cat will not use it as a litter box. Might work!
