Faux-Finish and Stencils for Wood Floors
We have all seen showhomes that showcase fancy hardwood floor edgings that really are pieces of art. Have you thought about trying this in your home? I know I have. These edgings are called faux finish floors and not as hard to do as they look. Faux finish floors are best done on new unfinished wood. However, if you want to try it on your existing floor you can sand down the floor to the bare board, seal the boards with 2 coats of polyurethane, and then apply your faux finish stencil.
We recommend that you draw your design out on paper and then tape your template to the floor using low tack masking tape. Use paints specifically designed for floors. Follow your stencil using different color paints to create your own unique faux finish. The floor is sealed with several coats of urethane when the painting is completed.
You can add your own style to give your faux finish floor something really unique and exotic looking, however, the easiest stencil for the beginner is probably something geometric. If you have some extra floor boards around try out some patterns and see if this is something you would like to do to your floors.
