Compare Costs for Prefinished and Site Finished Floors

When you compare the costs for prefinished and site finished floors you must take several factors into consideration.  These days, prefinished floors generally cost a little less than site finished. This can vary though depending on the area you live in.  In our area right now it is cheaper for prefinished. One of the reasons is that the finish is applied directly at the factory thus reducing on site labor costs.  You will never get as durable a finish in site finished floors as you do with those that have been factory finished.

Another factor to consider when comparing costs is convenience and time.  A prefinished floor can be installed much quicker than a site finished.  Experts recommend that you vacate your home while a site finished hardwood floors are installed.  Sanding is a very messy process and it takes time for the finishes to be applied and for them to dry.  However, if the hardwood is going into a new home, it may be better to have a site finished floor.  There are more choices in wood species in unfinished wood than in factory finished.  It is also easier to match colors to existing wood in the home if you choose unfinished wood.

Lastly, compare the labor costs for installing your floor.  Is the labour for a site finished floor the same or comparable to a prefinished floor when factored in with the time needed to complete the job?  Is the lesser cost for the prefinished floor worth maybe having to compromise on color or type of wood?
